Research Status
Active Research Framework Under Development
Evidence Level: Concept Development → Literature Mapping
Research Question
Can perceived access to cognitive, emotional, relational, creative, purposeful, and agency-based capacity be measured as a distinct construct during periods of stress, disconnection, anxiety, depression, or rumination?
Purpose of This Entry
This entry documents a deliberate shift in the Accessible Human Capacity Study.
The project is moving from theory-building into literature mapping.
This shift matters because the study must not assume that its central idea is new, useful, or scientifically distinct before reviewing existing research.
The immediate goal is to determine whether “capacity accessibility” is already captured by established psychological constructs, partially overlaps with them, or may represent a measurable research gap.
Background
The initial development phase explored several working concepts:
- Accessible Human Capacity
- Human Distance
- Human Gravity
- Human Expansion
- An 8-week app-based research instrument
These concepts helped shape the project’s early research direction.
However, a credible research program cannot move forward by adding more concepts indefinitely. Before developing measures, building an app, or inviting participants, the framework must be compared against existing psychological science.
Current Investigation
The current investigation asks:
Has psychology already measured what this project is calling “capacity accessibility” under another name?
The first literature mapping phase will review closely related constructs, including:
- psychological flexibility
- self-efficacy
- self-concept clarity
- flourishing
- wellbeing
- quality of life
- resilience
- agency/autonomy
- hope
- executive functioning
- emotional regulation
- social connectedness
Each construct will be examined for:
- definition
- existing measurement tools
- evidence base
- overlap with capacity accessibility
- distinction from capacity accessibility
- relevance to future study design
Evidence Reviewed
None yet in this entry.
This entry documents the transition into literature mapping. Future entries will document specific sources, constructs, findings, and decisions.
Observations
At this stage, several observations guide the project:
- Many related areas of psychology already study human functioning, adaptation, meaning, identity, and wellbeing.
- The project cannot claim originality until it has been compared against those established areas.
- “Capacity accessibility” may turn out to be distinct, partially overlapping, or already adequately measured by existing constructs.
- Any outcome is useful. If the idea is already measured elsewhere, the project should adapt rather than duplicate.
- The strongest version of the study will come from investigating existing science before making public claims.
Working Interpretation
The current working interpretation is provisional:
Capacity accessibility may describe the perceived availability of abilities a person believes they still possess, such as attention, emotional warmth, agency, connection, creativity, and meaning, during periods when stress or disconnection makes those abilities harder to access.
This may be different from measuring symptoms alone.
However, that distinction has not yet been established.
The literature mapping phase exists to test whether the distinction is meaningful.
Competing Explanations
Several explanations remain possible:
- 1. Capacity accessibility is a distinct construct.
- It may capture something not fully explained by current measures.
- 2. Capacity accessibility is a combination of existing constructs.
- It may overlap with psychological flexibility, self-efficacy, wellbeing, executive functioning, or quality of life.
- 3. Capacity accessibility is not scientifically necessary as a separate construct.
- Existing tools may already measure the same concept adequately.
- 4. The framework may need to be narrowed.
- The idea may be useful only in a specific context, such as emotional disconnection, daily functioning, or perceived agency during distress.
No conclusion has been reached.
Decision Log
Since Entry #001, the project has made one major decision:
The framework will not continue expanding until a literature map is completed.
This means:
- no new constructs
- no new theory names
- no app development claims
- no claims of novelty
- no claims of effectiveness
The next stage is investigation, not invention.
Remaining Questions
The literature mapping phase will attempt to answer:
- What existing constructs most closely resemble capacity accessibility?
- Which validated measures already assess related ideas?
- Does capacity accessibility add anything beyond symptom severity, wellbeing, functioning, or self-efficacy?
- Is Human Distance meaningfully distinct from depression, loneliness, dissociation, or quality of life?
- Should any proposed constructs be revised, merged, renamed, or removed?
- Is there enough of a gap to justify future measurement development?
Next Research Step
Begin the construct-by-construct literature map.
The first planned review will examine psychological flexibility, because it may be one of the closest existing constructs to capacity accessibility.
That review will ask:
- How is psychological flexibility defined?
- How is it measured?
- What outcomes does it predict?
- How much does it overlap with capacity accessibility?
- Does it already explain the core idea of this project?
