Research Question
Can perceived access to cognitive, emotional, relational, creative, purposeful, and agency-based capacity be measured as a distinct construct during periods of stress, disconnection, anxiety, depression, or rumination?
Purpose of This Entry
This entry marks the beginning of the public research-development record for the Accessible Human Capacity Study.
The purpose of this phase is not to prove a theory. The purpose is to investigate whether “capacity accessibility” is already captured by existing psychological constructs, or whether it may represent a measurable research gap worth studying further.
Current Position
This project does not claim to have validated a new psychological measure, treatment, diagnosis, or theory.
At this stage, the work is investigational and focused on:
- mapping existing literature
- comparing related constructs
- refining definitions
- identifying overlap with existing measures
- determining whether future measurement development is justified
Working Definition
For this project, accessible human capacity refers to a person’s perceived ability to access capacities they may still possess, including:
- attention and problem-solving
- emotional awareness and warmth
- relational availability
- agency and chosen action
- creativity and curiosity
- purpose and meaning
- physical energy and participation
The central question is not simply whether a person has these capacities, but whether they can access them during distress or disconnection.
Why This Question Matters
Two people may report similar levels of depression, anxiety, rumination, or loneliness, yet differ significantly in how much of their daily capacity feels available.
One person may still feel able to connect, create, act, and make meaning.
Another person may feel distant from those same abilities, even if they believe those abilities still exist somewhere underneath the distress.
This study asks whether that perceived difference can be defined, measured, and studied responsibly.
What We Are Investigating First
The first phase will compare this framework against established constructs, including:
- psychological flexibility
- self-efficacy
- self-concept clarity
- flourishing
- wellbeing
- quality of life
- resilience
- agency/autonomy
- hope
- executive functioning
- emotional regulation
- social connectedness
This step is necessary before claiming novelty.
What Would Strengthen the Framework
The framework becomes stronger only if future evidence suggests that capacity accessibility:
- is measurable
- is reliable over time
- is not fully explained by existing constructs
- predicts functioning or wellbeing beyond symptom severity
- changes in meaningful ways during daily life
- can be assessed without making clinical or therapeutic claims
What Would Weaken the Framework
The framework would need revision, narrowing, or removal if:
- existing constructs already measure the same idea
- proposed items duplicate established scales
- the construct adds no predictive value
- participants interpret the questions inconsistently
- changes in capacity accessibility simply mirror changes in depression, anxiety, or wellbeing
Negative findings would still be valuable. They would clarify where the framework should change or stop.
Competing Explanations
At this stage, several possibilities remain open:
- Capacity accessibility may be a distinct construct.
- It may explain something not fully captured by existing measures.
- Capacity accessibility may be a combination of known constructs.
- It may overlap with psychological flexibility, self-efficacy, wellbeing, and functioning.
- Capacity accessibility may not be useful as a separate construct.
- Existing tools may already measure it adequately.
The research process will determine which explanation is best supported.
Current Research Discipline
This project will not claim originality until it has earned the right to do so.
The immediate task is to investigate existing literature carefully and compare the framework against what psychology, psychiatry, behavioral science, and human development research already measure.
Next Step
Begin the literature mapping phase by reviewing the closest related constructs, starting with:
- psychological flexibility
- self-efficacy
- self-concept clarity
- flourishing
- wellbeing
- quality of life
Each construct will be examined for definition, measurement tools, evidence base, overlap, and distinction from capacity accessibility.
Research Integrity Statement
This project is an active research framework under development. The ideas, measures, and hypotheses described here are investigational and should not be interpreted as validated scientific findings, clinical guidance, diagnosis, or treatment unless supported by future peer-reviewed evidence.
